Activity 2: Looking at photographs

Students will look at photographs taken recently of Latino businesses in Jackson Heights and Washington Heights. They will identity what kinds of businesses they see, and discuss what kinds of customers these businesses are looking for. The teacher can distribute a list of questions, and the students can pass the pictures around and answer the questions in groups.

What products are for sale in the photos? Do the stores look expensive or inexpensive? (How would you describe them?)

What Spanish words do you recognize? (Latino students can translate for other students.)

What services are for sale? (Divorces, telephone calls, English lessons, travel agencies) What do these services tell you about the community?

What different kinds of food are for sale? Are they American style restaurants or Spanish? What kinds of restaurants do Latino students prefer? How about students from other countries? Can you tell how to make some of the foods in the pictures?

What kind of church do you see? How is it different from the churches in your country? Why do you think so?

Students will take a walk in the neighborhood around their school and look for Latino businesses, and describe them using Worksheet 2, Latino Businesses in Your Neighborhood.
