Activity 3: Problems of Dominicans

Students will read Document 6, the article "Dominicans...Have Lowest Income, Recent Study Shows," together in class with the teacher.

Vocabulary and concepts: poverty line, unskilled workers, restructuring of the economy, self-employment, educational attainment, public sector

Students will discuss the following questions:

How many Dominicans live in New York? What percentage of the total population is Dominican?

What reasons are given in the article for the economic problems of Dominicans? How was the data for this study gathered?

How was the economy changing? How did that hurt Dominicans?

Which sector of the economy employs most Dominicans? How does that contribute to low income? What does the study say about self-employed Dominicans?

According to the study, what percentage of Dominicans had not completed high school?

Why were so few Dominicans employed by the city?

What do you think can be done to help Dominicans?
