| Activity 3: Hispanics in the Recent Mayoral Election Students will read Document 12, an article from The New York Times about the recent election for mayor. They can discuss: How many candidates for mayor went to the Puerto Rican Day parade? Why did they go? What other political figures were there? How many of the candidates were Puerto Rican? What percentage of the Hispanic voters were not Puerto Rican? How important were Hispanics to the election? What statistics can you find to prove it? The teacher could tell the students about parades held each year in New York by other ethnic groups. As a research project, students can attend another parade and take notes about what they see: politicians who are marching, and organizations. They can photograph the parade and write a report of their observations to present to the class. |
