USING SEARCH ENGINES TO CATCH PLAGIARISM

If a student has submitted a research paper that you suspect has been cut and paste from the Internet, find some sophisticated wording in it--more sophisticated than you would expect on the basis of previous experience with this student's work and with as many unusual words as possible.

Altavista, which searches the full text of a website, is particularly good at finding such phrases. Google and Infoseek work well too.
