Q3:
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Academic Performance
A: In addition to helping children develop a greater sense of self-worth
and greater concern for others, feel more competent in handling
daily responsibilities and challenges, and establish more positive
and meaningful relationships, research also suggests SEL can improve
academic achievement, and reduce the likelihood students will engage
in various high-risk behaviors. SEL - especially the ability to
set goals, solve problems and communicate effectively- provides
a foundation for academic achievement. Educators, researchers and
policy makers are increasingly aware that social and emotional learning
needs to be a part of education in order to maximize academic outcomes,
and research has demonstrated a strong relationship between SEL
and academic success. Specifically, SEL has been demonstrated to
increase mastery of subject material, motivation to learn, anxiety
reduction, attention promotion, study skills improvements, commitment
to school, and time devoted to school work. SEL has also been shown
to improve attendance and graduation rates, as well as constructive
employment, while it reduces suspensions, expulsions, and grade
retention.
